Piemonte is one of the Italian regions with the greatest presence of girls forced into street prostitution. In this sense, the city of Asti is no exception: in recent years it has registered a 25% increase in the number of prostitutes on the city streets, many of them minors. Most are Nigerian. Each of them, for the criminal networks of the exploiters, represents a gain ranging from 35 to 50 thousand euros.
In 1999, following the meeting between Princess Inyang Okokon, a Nigerian woman and former victim of trafficking, and Alberto Mossino, the PIAM (Migrant Reception Integration Project) was born in Asti as a concrete response to the great emergency of the exploitation of prostitution on the streets of Asti. Since 2000, the PIAM has managed to save about 200 young women from the world of prostitution.
