In a couple of major studies from the 1990s and early 2000s, the Mediterranean diet was referred to as a diet with some preventative effect against cardiovascular disease. However, it is not yet clear which elements present in food give this effect.
An Italian-Swedish research project is trying to uncover this mystery by mapping the eating habits of Cilento, south of Naples, Italy, designated as one of the blue zones of the world, where an unusual number of people manage to live longer than to other places. At the end of September, a group of Swedish tourists aged between 50 and 80 went to Cilento and ate only Mediterranean food for a week. Participants initially had to submit blood and stool samples, and numerous other checks were made, including height, weight, body mass index, blood fat, blood sugar, and blood pressure. After a week of stay, the people were checked again by the research groups and the results, even after such a short time frame, showed small improvements.
