Since November 2013, thousands of Ukrainian protesters have invaded Maidan square and some of the greatest Kiev government buildings. At the beginning, the demonstrators were protesting against the decision of President Viktor Yanukovych of not joining a treaty that would bring the Ukraine closer to Europe Union. After a brutal crackdown by the police, the protesters in the streets have increased and the focus of the protests has moved towards the issue to bring down the government and put an end to corruption. After a few weeks of apparent calm, the violence resumed between police and protesters, which led to many victims on both sides. The president has left Kiev during the night between February 21st and 22nd, and was deposed by Parliament, which set for May 25th, the date of the presidential election.
