At the turn of the night of Halloween, a collective of Roman cryptoartists inaugurated the installation entitled "The Funeral - NFTs are dead" between the centuries-old underground walls of the Bourbon Gallery in Naples, Southern Italy. If according to many observers, the NFTs are already on the path of decline, the artistic performance organized by the group “Sewer Nation” represents instead a provocation to underline its vitality.
For the event, works were selected from the spells of genesis, rare pepe and fake rares, crypto punks, creeps & weirdos, x copy, beeple and more modern collections, in an attempt to clarify the history of this mysterious rise of the culture of digital art from 2015 to today.
Cryptoart is a category of art linked to blockchain technology, born in April 2018, when a couple of forward-looking galleries, the American SuperRare and the European KnownOrigin, exhibited the first digital works associated with NFT. Applied to the world of art, NFTs (Non Fungible Tokens) represent the guarantee of possession of a digital copy of a work, and are allowing many contemporary artists to see the sales of their works increase tenfold thanks to the possibility of putting on the market certified and traceable digital copies. Thanks to crypto-technology, digital works of art can be bought, sold or collected by anyone in a decentralized way.
